iPhone Profits A Mixed Blessing

Each iPhone sale nets Apple far more in profit margin than any other cell manufacturer is able to get from the sale of their similarly priced phones. Some Apple Fans I've spoken to suggest that this will somehow lead to Apple crushing all competitors.
The fact is that these profit margins, while impressive, are also a sign of possible problems for Apple in the near future.

Apple is able to be so profitable by squeezing both ends of the channel. At the manufacturing end they keep costs very low by using their volume to command the lowest prices for components and unit manufacturing costs. At the sales end they can get premium margins from carriers while requiring the carriers to sell iPhones for less than similar Android devices.
The way Apple has squeezed manufacturers to lower costs has created resentment on the part of many component suppliers who are in some cases, such as Samsung, also making their own phone. It has also created much bad publicity for Apple as information about slave-labor working conditions in Apple's factories has put a serious tarnish on Apple's "cool" image. Read more...

Android is cool ... and so is iOS ... and we should all be thankful that they are.

This will come as a shock to many people but both Android and iOS are popular for a simple reason. They both work very well and solve many similar, but not necessarily the same, problems for their respective users.
Both Android and iOS have their rabid supporters and detractors. Steve Jobs was a master at turning customers into raving fans so Apple may be ahead a bit in the raving fan race, but they both have their share. You can find their comments and flames on any blog about smartphones that allows comments.
Both sides of the argument seem to wish the other system would fail and go away.
